Ben Lake, the Plaid Cymru MP for Ceredigion Preseli, is leading a parliamentary debate on the risks of advanced artificial intelligence, according to Carmarthenshire News Online. The session marks the first debate in the Commons chamber specifically addressing regulation of advanced AI systems.
Lake is urging the UK Government to introduce enforceable rules for the most powerful AI technologies and limit the development of superintelligent systems. He argues that regulatory measures have not kept pace with technological progress, despite AI's potential economic and scientific benefits.
The MP also points to reports of AI systems operating beyond their intended limits, including incidents involving company networks and government systems in Australia and the United States. He wants Britain to strengthen international cooperation, using its G20 presidency to advance efforts to regulate advanced AI across national borders.
Andrea Miotti, founder and chief executive of ControlAI, welcomed Lake's position. The organisation supports an international prohibition on developing superintelligent AI. Miotti also highlighted a proposed Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill, introduced in September with Lake among its co-sponsors, which would prohibit development and require the government to pursue a global agreement.
