PauseAI Boise held what organizers described as Idaho's first protest focused on AI safety at Cecil D. Andrus Park on Oct. 24. According to Boise State University The Arbiter Online, participants called for stronger oversight and a pause in developing artificial intelligence systems that could surpass human capabilities across many fields.

The local group, founded by Jack and Cathryn Gardner, supports the use of AI tools but warns that increasingly powerful systems could pose serious risks. Its members want development suspended until adequate safety protections are established.

PauseAI advocates an international agreement to temporarily stop work on advanced systems, alongside an international body to supervise their training. In the United States, the organization also backs proposed legislation that would pause advanced AI development pending federal safety rules and prohibit the creation of superintelligent AI.

The Boise gathering featured volunteer speeches, informational leaflets and signs promoting human interests. Organizers said their campaign was nonviolent and nonpartisan. Attendees also expressed support for AI's beneficial applications while calling for rules and more careful consideration of its potential consequences.

The Gardners previously discussed AI safety concerns at a Boise State University panel in September. They said the protest was intended to broaden public awareness and demonstrate to elected officials that concerns about advanced AI extend beyond a small group of advocates.
