President Donald Trump has announced a new federal task force focused on artificial intelligence, according to TechCrunch. National intelligence director Jay Clayton will lead the initiative alongside other administration officials.
The group will coordinate government efforts to maintain US leadership in advanced AI. Its creation follows Trump's executive order promoting the term "super intelligence" as part of his administration's AI branding.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor will serve as vice chairs.
The task force has 120 days to prepare a report examining AI's potential benefits and dangers. Its mandate also calls for plans to address threats enabled by advanced AI while avoiding excessive regulation that could hinder competition and innovation.
Clayton has previously argued that the United States should continue advancing AI as international competitors, including China, make progress. He has also identified losing the race to develop the technology as a major concern.
