The Navy has ordered commands to use “super intelligence,” or “SI,” instead of “artificial intelligence” and “AI” in official communications, according to Stars and Stripes. The change applies to websites, correspondence, training materials and other documents.

The directive says the new terminology reflects the Navy’s rapid expansion of advanced technology and the capabilities it believes go beyond traditional automation. The Marine Corps announced a similar policy the following day.

President Donald Trump directed executive branch agencies, including military services, to make the terminology change. The Navy appears to be the first military service to formally issue guidance on it, while the Army, Air Force and Space Force had not clarified their positions.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has emphasized technological innovation and the use of AI. In the broader technology field, “super intelligence” generally describes a hypothetical system whose intellectual abilities exceed those of the most capable humans; no such system has demonstrated that level of capability.
