Musk Says Future Super Intelligence Compute Will Be Almost Entirely in Space

Elon Musk says the computing power behind future Super Intelligence will be "overwhelmingly" in space, a share he says will "round up to 100%".

Elon Musk has made one of his boldest forecasts yet about where Super Intelligence will physically live. In a social media post on November 2, reported by TokenPost and Tesla North, the SpaceX chief said the computing power behind future Super Intelligence will sit almost entirely in orbit, not in data centers on the ground.

"Future super intelligence compute will obviously be overwhelmingly in space."

He then spelled out what he meant: by "overwhelmingly", he said, the share "will round up to 100%".

A reply to a Sequoia partner

Musk was responding to Shaun Maguire, a partner at venture firm Sequoia Capital who has been sharing a bottom-up financial model of SpaceX. Maguire argues that SpaceX can become the lowest-cost producer of compute, starting on the ground and moving to orbit.

Maguire said he will publish a systems-level analysis of orbital compute "over the next week or two", adding that almost all Super Intelligence compute will end up in space. Musk answered with a single word: "Absolutely." The analysis has not been released yet.

Further than his earlier forecast

The Monday posts go beyond what Musk said only days before. In a note on Friday, he said monthly deployment of orbital compute would probably overtake new capacity on the ground around the end of 2028. The latest claim is about the long-run total, not just the pace of new builds.

The hardware behind the idea

SpaceX's planned Star Mind AI satellites are designed to fly in large formations, each carrying more than 250 kilowatts of solar power, according to Tesla North. Musk is not alone in betting on orbit: Google's first Project Suncatcher orbital AI satellite is set to ride on a SpaceX rideshare mission.

Musk's figure is a forecast, not a deployment schedule, and neither SpaceX nor Maguire has yet published numbers that show how it would be reached.

Why it matters

Musk runs both a rocket company and an AI company, so where he expects Super Intelligence to run is also a statement about where he plans to invest. His claim adds to a growing push, from SpaceX to Google, to treat orbit as the next home for large-scale compute. The next marker is Maguire's promised systems-level analysis, which should show whether the numbers back up the "100%" claim.
