Luke Metz, an artificial intelligence researcher, is joining Meta Platforms' Superintelligence Labs, according to Yahoo Finance UK. He is due to begin the role this week and will report to Alexandr Wang, who leads the company's AI efforts.

The team under Wang has introduced several AI models for Meta in recent months. Metz's appointment comes amid competition among leading AI research organisations to attract experienced researchers.

Metz left OpenAI in 2024 to work at Thinking Machines, the organisation led by Mira Murati. He returned to OpenAI earlier in 2026 before choosing to move to Meta.

The hire adds to Meta's broader recruitment push across the technology industry. The company stepped up its efforts following a multibillion-dollar agreement with Scale AI that brought its former chief executive, Wang, to Meta.

The appointment was first highlighted on X by user ArfurGrok, who has drawn attention to other AI industry personnel changes. Axios also received confirmation from a source familiar with the appointment.
